From: Femi Mustapha
A Group under the auspices of
Kaduna Social Protection Accountability Coalition (KADSPAC), has lauded kaduna State Goverment under the leadership of Mallam Nasir El Rufai for its proactiveness in checking the spread of COVID-19 pandemic and setting up of the State Relief Distribution & Monitoring Committee.
This was contained in a Communique Issued at the end of Stakeholders’ Virtual Town-Hall Meeting with the Theme, “COVID-19 and Palliative Interventions in Kaduna State”
The Group acknowledged that
the palliatives distribution was timely and commendable as many of the beneficiaries were happy that the government was sensitive to their plight due to the lockdown.
Communique however noted that the pilot distribution in 9 urban local government areas (LGAs) witnessed a number of challenges such as the lack of uniformity in the content and quantity of the food items for each household, as some beneficiaries got one item while others got mix of items.
Similarly Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and media were not adequately involved in the process of the palliative distribution, and faced difficulty in accessing information. However, despite these challenges, networks like KADSPAC took the initiative of tracking the process and report back to stakeholders including the government.
KADSPAC said it is set to ensure that all beneficiaries were capture in subsequent Distributions,by making a formal request for Relief Distribution and Monitoring Committee activities and financial report base on the assurances made that it will be made available in line with the principles of OGP.
“Advocate for involvement of CSOs/Media in all levels of palliative distribution committees to support in providing technical support in creating awareness, ensuring proper targeting and accountability
“Strengthen synergy and collaboration between the CSOs/Media and relevant government offices driving Social Protection system in the areas of the policy implementation, expanding the social register (Community Based Targeting process), timely information-sharing, tracking interventions (Federal and State) and accountability.
” The CSOs and media will cross-check any information on Social Protection interventions with the relevant government offices before disseminating it to check misinformation.
” Advocate to the government to generate the database of persons with disabilities in the state to ensure proper planning of tailored socio-economic interventions.Advocate for increased distribution of non-food items such as face masks and hand sanitizer, particularly to rural dwellers in the next phase” the Communique reads.
