Social Inclusion: PWD commends KDSG for including them in APPEALS projects
Persons With Disability and Special Needs, (PWDSN), in Kaduna State has commenced Governor Nasir Ahmed El-Rufa’i, for involving their members in the Agro-Processing Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support Project, (APPEALS) programme.
The Executive Director, Women with Disability Self-Reliance Foundation, Mrs Risikat Toyin Muhammed, stated during a 2-day interactive meeting on harmonization of needs assessment and formulation of livelihood package for People with Disability and Special Needs, (PWDSN) in Kaduna on Monday.
Mrs Risikat Toyin Muhammed, the projects will reduce poverty and create differs opportunity.
She expressed gratitude to the State Government for including 85 PWDSN, however appealed to the government to stick to the 5 per cent agreed upon in the proposal.
She added that selecting 85 for empowerment to reduce poverty amongst many PWDSN means we have not reach 1 per cent of them in Kaduna State.
“We have different clusters of PWD and we have to reach out to them.”
Speaking earlier, State Project Coordinator, Dr Yahaya Aminu, said 85 persons with various forms of disability are among the 1,700 people targeted to benefit from the project.
The Coordinator represented by the State Ginger Facilitator, Reuben Teddy Sonkop, said
5 per cent of the beneficiaries are PWDSN which represent 85 persons.
The Women and Youth/Livelihood Specialist of Kaduna APPEALS, Ibrahim Yakubu, in a brief presentation on objectives of the day’s meeting, explained that it is it is harmonized existing needs assessments conducted by states and disaggregated by gender, location, categories of disabilities, segments of intervention;
He said the meeting will also streamline the four selected categories of PWDSN and others as pecu to the state, to be supported by either from the IDA or Counterpart funding, i.e Visually Impaired; Hearing Impaired; Physically Challenged and Dump.
Yakubu also said the meeting will analye disability by impairment and gender (visual, hearing, speech, mobility and multiple impairment, age group, Local Government Area, value chains/segment of interest and come up with proposal of sustainable livelihood packages or BIP within threshold for Women and Youth Empowerment.
The APPEALS is a programme of the Government of Malam Nasir El-Rufai with support from the World Bank.
