Childbirth number one killer of Teenage girls — SCI

Save the Children International(SCI) has disclosed that Childbirth is the number killer of Teenage girls because their young body is jot ready to bear children.
The Chief Executive Officer of SCI, Inger Ashing stated this in a statement to mark the International Day of Girl Child (IDG) and made available to the media
She lamented that 44% of girls in Nigeria are married before their 18th birthday, one of the highest rates of child marriage globally.
She expressed dismay that the rates are not likely to decrease today as Nigerian girls are living in one of the most difficult times as a result of armed conflict, humanitarian crisis, kidnapping, natural disaster, displacement, COVID-19 pandemic, and economic recession.
She added that the lives of millions of girls are threatened to be pushed into the basket of deprivation, including reduced access to education, nutrition, lack of protection, and lack of access to basic social services.
The CEO explained that gender inequality continued to fuel child marriage, saying there is a common perception that younger girls ‘Refresh older men with their ‘Younger blood’.
She called on all well-meaning Nigerians to join in addressing the risk of gender-based violence including child marriage by putting girls’ rights and gender equality at the center of Covid-19 and humanitarian responses.
