Persons with Disabilities have reminded the kaduna State Government that failure to effectively implement the provisions contained in the Disability Rights law passed in the state will render the law ineffective.
They asserted this during a dialogue with Media Professionals on the Kaduna State Disability Law organized by Women with Disability Self Reliance Foundation in collaboration with Sight savers and Jalad Media Concept held in kaduna.
The Disability Rights law was passed on the 29th April, 2021 by the present administration led by the Mallam Nasiru El-rufai.
The Executive Director, Women with Disability Self Reliance Foundation(WWDRSF), Risikat Toyin Mohammed who commended the State Government for the passage of the disability rights law, said a good law is only as effective as its implementation, and failure to implement will render such a law ineffective. We must not rest on our laurels.
She therefore called on the Government of Mallam Nasiru El- Rufia ‘s administration to urgently commence the implementation of Disability law signed into law by him in order to ensure their protection.
” It is no secret that societal barriers place persons with disabilities at increased risk of violence, poverty, poorer health outcomes, marginalisation in their communities, and fewer educational and employment opportunities. Such outcomes are not inevitable, however, and this is why we have to be deliberate on disability inclusion,” she said.
Similarly, National President of National Association of Persons with Physical Disability (NAPWPD) Rilwan Mohammed Abdullahi said that a society’s humanity is measured by the way it treats vulnerable population, especially persons with disabilities, regretted that after women, children and youths, disabled persons constitute one of the next categories of marginalised sector in Nigeria and Africa.
He added that Challenges faced by PWDs have been further exacerbated by the Socio- Economic problems bedevilling the state, which he make access to healthcare more restricted and people who rely on physical assistance face significant constraints in their daily life.
