Christian/Muslim clerical harps on peaceful co-existence

Christian / Muslim clerics in Kaduna have admonished Nigerians to inculcate the spirit of tolerance and peaceful coexistence to allow for peace to reign in the country.

Speaking during the ECWA Church Friend Day, held yesterday, the Secretary of Sultan Bello Mosque, Sheik Hamisu Ya’u commended what was obtained in the South West, where habitual peaceful co-existence of both faiths has been established for years, in spite of unrests in various parts of the country.

He, however, said it is disheartening that every religious crisis originated from the core North because religion is taken before humanity.

According to him, the two Abrahamic faiths in Nigeria have a cordial relationship during the time of the prophet, noting that the devil is the source of the country’s problem and any religion without humanity is fake.

Dr. Hamisu who is a lecturer at the Kaduna State University ((KASU) said most of the communal crises in the country are sponsored by politicians and religious leaders.

“The insecurity in the country was sponsored by the political elite and religious leaders seeking to weaken the country.

”Most of the instances of inter-communal and inter-religious strife and violence were and are still as a result of sponsorship or incitements by ethnic, political or religious leaders hoping to benefit by exploiting our divisions and fault lines, thereby weakening our country. Our country Nigeria is a great country,” he said.

Similarly, Rev. Joshua Nyam said the manner some groups in the name of religion is complete and utter disregard human life

They only want the killing and maiming of the innocent. They are traumatizing the people and causing intense fright and dread among the populace.

He opined that Nigerians, especially Northern, will only enjoy peaceful coexistence if they respect others’ socio-cultural values and are each other’s keepers.

Speaking in the same vein, Sheik Salihu Abdullahi said before the current hostility, there was a long tradition of interaction between people of different religions as well as inter-faith marriages.

He also added that the climate of peace, then, was a product of respect for each religious belief, adding that it was achieved through maturity.

A Traditional ruler, Zanna Sotoma Wakilin Shehu of Borno, Chief Bata Madaka Auta
blamed the political class for using their political ambitions to fuel religious suspicions and unrest in the country.

The Royal Father advised Nigerians to shun politicians and affluent people who are politicizing religion, noting that the Bible and the Quran do not belong to any political party.

He said nobody could claim to love God without loving his neighbors, whether Muslims or Christians.
