Campaigns Shouldn’t Be About How Bad Incumbent Govt Is — Activist Tells Oppositions

A Kaduna-based Activist, Yusuf Goje has advised opposition parties that their campaign should not be about how bad the incumbent government is, rather they should tell Nigerians what they have done over the past three years to keep the incumbent in check or hold them accountable.
He stated this in a statement made available to the media in Kaduna on 3rd, July 2022.
Goje said Nigerians can discern and judge for themselves if the incumbent has performed or not, so they don’t need anybody to campaign for them on this.
The Activist added that populist narratives, such as “I will reverse the policies and reforms of the incumbent” are not enough reason for the People to vote for any opposition parties.
Goje explained that the role of the opposition is not just to appear every election to canvass for votes after being absent when the people needed them most, in terms of evidence-based engagement of their policies, reforms, budgets, and public service delivery.
“Importantly, tell us what alternative plans, policies, or reforms you intend to bring on board and why it is better than what the incumbent has offered.
“Furthermore, we are interested in knowing how you intend to raise the revenue to actualize it while ensuring fiscal accountability and debt sustainability.
In conclusion, tell us what outcomes we should expect annually in terms of the number of jobs created; the number of persons removed out of poverty; the number of MSMEs supported to scale; the percentage reduction in illiteracy; percentage reduction in child and maternal mortality and the percentage reduction in banditry and kidnapping.” The statement reads
