Naira, Fuel Scarcity: Northern Youth Calls for Postponement of Elections

By: Femi Mustapha

Following the incessant fuel and Naira scarcity across the country the Arewa Youth Assembly has called for the immediate suspension of the 2023 General Elections to enable Nigerians, especially menial workers from the Northern region who are littered all over the country in search of greener pastures to return to where they registered to vote.

The Speaker, Assembly Mohammed Salihu Danlami, stated this in a statement made available to the media in Kaduna on 21st February 2023.

The statement stated that the fuel and Naira scarcity has defied all known solutions proffered by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Committee on Fuel Scarcity and the recommendations by the National Council of State, the National Assembly, and Nigeria Governors Forum on how to ease the suffering the masses are passing through.

The statement added that the Arewa Youth Assembly is worried that even those in the city whose polling units are far away from their homes can’t be able to transport themselves to cast their votes.

The Assembly also said it is worried over the increasing spade of carnage and attacks on Security formations in the Southeast and other private businesses in the Southwestern part of the country.

“If security personnel, formations, and banks can be easily attacked, what more of the harmless, innocent Nigerians?

“In order not to deny Nigerians the privilege of electing who will be in charge of our beloved country in the next Four Years, we wish to call on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to suspend all processes leading to the election.

“Failure to suspend the election will be considered as tactical rigging targeted at poor Nigerians, as most of them are struggling to survive in this challenging period caused by the artificial scarcity of the Naira.” The statement reads.
