Worried by the plight of prison inmates in the  Kaduna State Correctional Centre, the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) in collaboration with the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA)  on 2nd November 2023  embarked on an outreach to the Kaduna Medium Correctional Center.

The delegation leader, Dr. Zainab Muhammad Idris Kwaru National President-Elect of MWAN  said the aim of the outreach is a visit to the female inmates, have a Health talk with them, Provides  Probono services for 5 female inmates and  Regular monthly sensitization visits on the need to be law-abiding.

Dr. Zainab Muhammad Idris Kwaru added that the Association will also Provide psychosocial support and Donation of Food and medical supplies.

She explained that aside from attending to sick patients, they, as doctors also have corporate social responsibility (CSR) to visit inmates and give a beam of light of hope to them.

She added that they did not come empty-handed, but brought items that would help alleviate the suffering of the female inmates.

She stressed that as women  Doctors, they should rather continue to be good ambassadors of the Profession while remaining penitent and seeking forgiveness, guidance, and mercy from God for the inmates, adding that their travail is temporary.

Similarly, the President of FIDA, Aisha Abdul Mohammed said, FIDA decided to partner with the women’s doctor to ensure that the light of hope is rekindled in the hearts of the female inmates.

She expressed dismay that some of the female inmates are convicted with options of fines which are meagre but can’t be afforded which is why some are still incapacitation, therefore, both organizations will come together to find a way to address the issue.

While welcoming the team to the facility, the deputy controller in charge of the Kaduna Medium Correctional Centre, Abdullahi Bala Dangana, appreciated the kind gesture and called on other organizations to borrow a leaf from the Association.
